Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leaders expressed concern over the drifting away of traditional minority votes after the party’s poor showing in the Lok Sabha elections.

At the 25th Foundation Day of the party in Mumbai on Monday, NCP leaders vowed to get back the minority votes in the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly polls.

NCP leader Baba Siddique, who recently joined the party from Congress, said in politics, every section of society should be considered.

Citing examples of how Telugu Desam Party chief Chandrababu Naidu supported Muslim reservations in Andhra Pradesh, Siddique demanded the consideration of reservations for Muslims and the Dhangar caste, along with the Maratha community.

He further pointed out how a resolution was passed between Bihar Chief Minister and JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar and allies in Bihar about their stand on the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

“Our party policy should be independent of the policies of the allied partners on the national front,” he said.

He also said that the work done for the upliftment of the minorities is not advertised the way the others did.

Another senior leader, Chhagan Bhujbal, said, “We need to internalise why the Buddhists, Muslims, Dalits and Adivasis left us. Development is important, but our words regarding Muslims isolated and bothered them. ‘Ab ki baar 400 paar’ meant ‘Humara bedaa paar’ for minorities. Even former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s arrest deflected Adivasi voters from us.”

He further said that the NCP has to “get back” minority votes in the assembly elections.

“Changing the Constitution cannot be a factor during the Assembly polls. We cannot win without these (minority) votes,” Bhujbal said.

“We take the names of Jyotirao Phule, Shahu and Dr BR Ambedkar, but we also need to show in our actions that we follow their footsteps,” he added.

NCP chief Ajit Pawar said, “We have repeatedly clarified that no matter what, we stand firm by the ideologies of Phule, Shahu and Ambedkar. However, I admit that we fell short of conveying it to our voters. I also assure that no one has the guts to change the Constitution. We will make sure that we reach out to our core voters who always believe in us.”
