The Vadodara Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) on Tuesday caught two hardened criminals with over 20 cases of theft and chain snatching registered against them across several police stations of Gujarat.

The police said the lure of easy money for trips to Goa and a “loyal partnership” turned two dropouts into criminals.

The two accused, aged 29, were caught in five fresh cases of theft of two-wheelers and chain snatching registered against them at Akota, Panigate and Sama police stations.

According to the Vadodara DCB, the two accused, Vaibhav Jadhav and Bhavin Chandpa, became “thick friends” as roommates when they were studying at a Junagadh college in 2014. Jadhav, a native of Junagadh, was pursuing B.Sc and Chandpa was pursuing BBA.

In the last 15 days, the accused committed two thefts of two-wheelers in the jurisdiction of Akota and Panigate police stations, which were used to commit three chain snatchings in the jurisdiction of Sama police station.

Festive offer

On Wednesday, Harpalsinh Rathod, Assistant Commissioner of Police, DCB, said, “We had a tip-off that the two accused were arriving in Vadodara to commit theft.”

Rathod added, “Since hard work brings in money slowly, they resorted to chain snatching and two-wheeler thefts to make easy money that they would spend on their extravagant expenditures.”

Crime Branch Police Inspector Ravirajsinh Jadeja said that the two accused hailed from middle-class families but had decided to discontinue their education and resort to thefts to “have easy income” instead of looking for employment.

The modus operandi

The police said that the two accused were settled in Surat, from where they would travel by trains and arrive in Vadodara and escape after committing theft. The investigation has revealed that the accused then sold off the stolen gold and used the money to travel to Goa, where they played in casinos.

Jadeja said, “They first committed a theft of a two-wheeler in Rajkot in 2014 and gained confidence in their modus operandi. Jadhav has 15 cases and Chandpa has 10 cases against him in Junagadh, Veraval, Keshod, Surat and Rajkot. They have been arrested previously and Jadhav was even jailed under PASA (Prevention of Anti Social Activities Act, 1985), which is when the two were separated. However, recently, they reunited after Jadhav returned from jail and around five weeks back, began staying together in a dormitory in Surat.”

Jadeja added that after coming back together, the duo first committed theft of a 30 gram gold chain in the Sama area of Vadodara and sold it off to travel to Goa, where they spent the money in casinos.

“About 15 days ago, they returned to Vadodara and committed the theft of a motorcycle and used it in two incidents of chain snatching. They dumped the motorcycle and escaped with the gold chain and used the money to travel to Goa to play in casinos. They were caught while attempting another chain snatching in Vadodara city.”

The police have recovered three more gold chains worth Rs 3.15 lakh from the accused as well as a motorcycle worth Rs 45,000 along with a mobile phone from the possession of the accused. ACP Rathod added that the custody of the two accused has been handed over to Sama police station for further investigation.
